My brother has the Kawasaki engine in his lawn tractor and he loves it. It starts beautifully and runs flawlessly. Vastly superior to any Briggs engines. A diesel might be overkill in a lawn tractor unless it is commercial. ....

How much will you pay for your JD 400 series. I was looking at a used one at my local dealer. He wanted over 10'000 for a 4 wheel steer gas unit with 600 hours. I thought that was crazy. For that money Kubota's BX 1800 or 2200 are the same price with a diesel engine, 4 wheel drive, and a category 1 (although small) 3 point hitch. The JD 400 series is a good mower and is used everywhere by commercial mowers. It's the last in the series that JD has not made cheap and plastic so I am a bit sentimental about it. Still when I compared the orange BX to the green 400 I had to buy orange.

PS: My last JD had a liquid cooled Kawasaki 17 hp twin cylinder. When it ran, it ran well but it had to have very clean fuel or else it whent downhill quickly. My parents had a 16 hp diesel on an older JD and it would cut a path 10 inches wider and never bogged down in heavy wet grass. If I had the choice and the money I would go for the diesel. The diesel uses much less fuel and it just can not be beat for cutting power ....
